Amalia takes a deep breath is not a simple story.
It is a story that recreates the world of the communist regime in all its absurdity.
A story about a soul lost in communism.
A story that does not condemn the past but recalls it.
A story about survival in an environment that uses its entire arsenal to dehumanize you, brainwash you, and infect you with communist ideology.
A story you can only experience if you allow yourself to be carried away by the game called dream.

The fate of Romania, from the 1960s to the year 2000, unfolds through the life of a woman who lives through this period. As a young pioneer, a mother, and later an elderly woman, she walks a sad path, yet one filled with innocence, serenity, and courage.
Amalia's childhood traumas – which she herself does not acknowledge as such – and her personal struggles and losses intertwine with the blows of the dark communist era, from the rise to power to the peak of the Ceaușescu regime.
The protagonist seeks meaning in the events unfolding around her and in her own life – thus she develops various coping mechanisms that make the unbearable losses of an impossible era more endurable.

The characters Amalia recalls in her family stories, as well as the secondary themes – the condition of women, romantic relationships, and homosexual relationships – succeed in recreating the universe of the communist regime with all its madness, absurdity, and horror.
In this way, Amalia takes a deep breath becomes the true epilogue of that era.
