The Seagull of Chekhov presents
the path that the current creator – be it a writer, artist or theatre-man –
goes from the artistic motivation to create, from the torturous need of the
novelty and originality till his Ars poetica – which is often disappointing. We
must have it under a new form. If we can’t do that, let us rather not have it
at all. – this is the initial ideal of The Seagull’s main character, Treplev, a
young rural writer, who is also experimenting with theatre-making. He arrives
at his final realization through failure and disappointments: the form is not
important, the creation have to be honest and direct, and it “must pour freely
from the author’s heart.”
