Rhinoceros, directed by László Bocsárdi, founder of Figura Studio Theatre, is not only the crowning moment of last year’s 40th anniversary season, but also the beginning of a new chapter. The production, created in collaboration with the Tamási Áron Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe, will premiere in Gheorgheni on August 31, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., followed by performances on September 2 and 3. The audience in Sfântu Gheorghe will have the opportunity to see Rhinoceros for the first time on September 24.

Eugène Ionesco, the playwright, is known as one of the founders of the Theatre of the Absurd. Written in 1958, Rhinoceros explores how ordinary people become part of mass hysteria—or resist it, rebelling in a world where society gradually transforms into rhinoceroses. The play was conceived as a critique of the sudden rise of fascism and dictatorship before World War II—a theme which, as the director noted, remains disturbingly relevant today.

The production’s dramaturg, Réka Dálnoky, sought during the rehearsal process to remain faithful not merely to the text, but to its spirit. This absurdist drama called for a non-conventional space, one that presses upon the audience, designed by József Bartha. The sterile environment is deliberately intended to evoke and sustain a sense of confinement. The coproduction brought joy to the actors of both ensembles, offering them the chance to reunite and create together once again, while also posing challenges due to the density and fragmentation of the text.

As the director described, Rhinoceros is “an interwoven, organic adventure” of the two companies. After a long time away, he returned to Gheorgheni to stage this deeply human story, in which ideas themselves become the central focus.

The production is recommended for audiences aged 16 and above.
