Rhinoceros, directed by László Bocsárdi, founder of the theatre, not only crowns last year’s 40th anniversary season but also marks the beginning of a new chapter. The production, created in co-production with the Tamási Áron Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe, will have its Romanian premiere on August 31, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., followed by performances in Gheorgheni on September 2 and 3. The audience in Sfântu Gheorghe will see Rhinoceros for the first time on September 24.

Regarding the 2025/26 season, István Albu, the theatre’s director, stated that this year their goal is to deepen the artistic work. After Rhinoceros, two rehearsal processes will begin: Béres László will stage Alina Nelega’s monodrama Améli’s Sigh with Boróka Bartha, while in parallel, the ensemble will rehearse Bányavirág, a contemporary drama by Hungarian author from Transylvania Csaba Székely, directed by Zénó Faragó. Later, István Albu will direct Platonov, followed by the return of Florin Vidamski, director of Tóték, to stage a novel adaptation, Csevengur. The season will conclude with Botond Nagy’s rehearsal process, whose premiere will take place in the following season.

Performances from previous years will remain in the repertoire: Szép magyar komédia, Übü király, A kisgyerek és az oroszlánok, Ház a határon, Liliom, Love me, Mozaik, Az ember tragédiája, A két Korea újraegyesítése, Portugál, Fellegkuckó, and Drognapló will continue to be available for audiences.

The 15th edition of the theatre’s festival, the Ethnic Theatre Colloquium, which was scheduled for November this year, had to be canceled after careful consideration, despite preparations already being underway. The theatre is currently operating from a temporary location, and without a large stage, it could not ensure the high-quality and uninterrupted presentation of the invited performances. Financial uncertainty was also a significant reason for postponing the event. The cancellation serves as an important signal for the city, highlighting the need for a Cultural Centre in Gheorgheni to host large-scale, high-quality events and accommodate visiting productions.
