Figura Studio Theatre in Gheorgheni celebrated its 40th anniversary in an unconventional way. Instead of a traditional commemoration, the company chose to mark the jubilee with a season-long series of events.
The structure of the season’s premieres was planned according to this principle: successful performances from Figura’s early years were reimagined and staged in a new approach. This led to A kisgyerek és az oroszlánok, directed by the company’s actor Gábor Kolozsi Borsos; Ház a határon, staged by Attila Keresztes; Übü király, directed by Sardar Tagirovsky; and Szép magyar komédia, directed by István Albu. The first premiere of the season was an exception: Molnár Ferenc’s Liliom was presented by the company for the first time in September, also directed by István Albu. The set designer, Erika Márton, was nominated for the Uniter Award and also received recognition at the 37th Kisvárda Festival of Hungarian Theatres; Míra Szilágyi, playing Juli in Liget, was awarded the Teplánszky Prize for young talents.
In addition to these five premieres, the production Rhinoceros, a co-production with the Tamási Áron Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe, entered its final rehearsal week, directed by the theatre’s founder, László Bocsárdi. During the season, under the curatorship of Annabella Orosz, the hybrid theatre exhibition Fordulatok was created, and in the direction of Zsolt Csiki, the documentary film Figurások – Forty Years at Figura was produced, presented as a birthday gift from the company to the theatre.
During the 2024/2025 season, the company performed 87 shows for nearly 10,000 spectators in Gheorgheni and 33 other locations, including Miercurea Ciuc, Brașov, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Sărmașu, Kisvárda, Giula, Satu Mare, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, among others. The company also participated in the dráMA contemporary theatre meeting, the HolnapUtán Festival, MOST Fest, the 37th Kisvárda Festival of Hungarian Theatres, and iFest.
The official closing ceremony of the season took place on June 28, covering all three locations where Figura has been active over the past forty years. At Öntöde, a guided tour of the Fordulatok exhibition took place; next to the Cultural Centre building, Mayor Zoltán Nagy and Director István Albu placed a time capsule and planted a tree in honor of the theatre; in the evening, the documentary film was presented in the courtyard of the City Library. The closing event, Figurázó, was supported by the Communitas Foundation.
