As the warm season arrives, Figura Studio Theatre gains new momentum: in May, we welcome both children and adults with a wide range of exciting performances.

We open the month with two guest productions. On May 5, audiences can watch Clown Wanted, presented by the Gyula Castle Theatre. The play depicts the last chance of three elderly clowns who long to be part of a stage production one more time. The passing of time increasingly diminishes not only their chances of performing but also of confronting the finitude of their own lives. The ticking of a clock behind the door further emphasizes this sense of mortality, serving as a constant reminder for the audience.

On May 7, we host Determined, a solo drama from the Tamási Áron Theatre of Sfântu Gheorghe. The production takes us deep into the inner world of poet Attila József, tracing his thoughts, struggles, and the development of his mental illness. The title itself – Determined – points to the idea that the poet’s tragic fate was shaped not only by circumstances but also by an inexorable sense of destiny.

Throughout the month, our troupe will also perform in other cities. On May 7, at the Redut Cultural Center in Brașov, we will stage the children’s play The Child and the Lions, telling the story of the friendship between Panka and Siegfried. On May 12, as part of the HolnapUtán Festival in Oradea, local students will see our classroom version of The Tragedy of Man.

During the 2024/2025 season, our theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary. To honor this milestone, we selected several productions from our early years, offering audiences in May a diverse repertoire ranging from love dramas to plays exploring political abuses and power struggles.

On May 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Öntöde Studio Hall, we will present The House on the Border, based on the satirical novella by Sławomir Mrożek. The story follows an ordinary family whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of two diplomats, raising the thought-provoking question: how long will we blindly follow the words of our politicians?

On May 14, Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m., Alfred Jarry’s groundbreaking play Ubu Roi will return to the stage. This grotesque tale of abuse of power, blackmail, and betrayal features the iconic characters of Father Ubu and Mother Ubu, who embody timeless social criticism. On this occasion, the performance will be presented with Romanian subtitles.

On May 17, Saturday, at 7:00 p.m. in the Öntöde Hall, we will stage the only surviving drama by Bálint Balassi, directed by our theatre’s director, István Albu. The new adaptation is built on the dramaturgical idea that while time passes, the inner worlds of the characters remain unchanged: outwardly they grow old, but inwardly they preserve their youthful, love-filled selves. The play can also be read as a love confession, a story transcending both time and space.

Tickets are available in advance on figura.ro or at the venue before each performance. For information and reservations: +40 752 227 011 or org@figura.ro
