A concert from Ferenc Molnar’s famous play or a play from the song of Tankcsapda? Here’s a hint: there’s no right answer. „All or nothing” – must have thought the director, István Albu, when imagining the theater’s own carousel.
Like in all cases, the
ever-avoidant Liliom does not get further on the stairway to heaven, in turn, Zénó Faragó’s portrayal of
the character is seasoned with some rockstar filth, showing us what it would
look like, if he really were the frontman of a group of angels with black wings.
What does that even look like you might ask?
The Tankcsapda hits
that summarize the seven scenes are not just an attempt at making a show. They
are in fact monologues.
It’s always been a dream
of mine to get a peek into Liliom’s
mind, no matter how much the audience is rooting for it, this story will never
have a happy ending,he will always hit his daughetrs hand, but the songs in the
play act as footnotes, almost confessions of the lead’s sins.
The judgement is
ultimately in God’s hands, nonetheless I can’t help but feel obligated to do so
because Juli will always be a victim of Liliom, no matter the century. As the
three parts of the carousel-like turning stage (heaven, apartment, park) the
audience too gets dizzy from the whirlwind of abuse that the girl is subjected
to, from which the only way out is death, we can only hope that Liliom’s regret
will be stronger than how it reads.
