Celebrating the 40th anniversary of its institutionalization, the theatre company wishes to connect with our beloved viewers to honor the birthday of Figura Stúdió Színház.

Harghita county’s oldest theatre started out in the Öntöde (Foundry) building, the same building it is currently residing in due to reconstruction on the theatre’s main home. This nostalgic season of 2024/25 will be filled with surprises and will house six premiers, the second edition of FiguraFeszt miniseason, a performance-exhibition and a documentary shining light on the past four decades of the theatre company’s history and legacy.

The company kicks off the season with Molnár Ferenc’s Lilom, directed by István Albu, with Erika Marton’s set and costume design, Szabolcs Korpos as musical consultant. Molnar Ferenc’s play - one of the most played and most famous plays in Hungarian drama literature – will be seasoned with live rock music, premiering on the 4th of September, in the studio hall of the Foundry building.

Following the premiere of Liliom, the company will reach back to the beginnings, rethinking plays that the Figura company worked on in the first couple years of it’s institutionalization. Yet another premiere will be held at the end of the month: on September 28th a recurring director Attila Keresztes working on Sławomir Mrożek’s House on the Border, originally directed by István Kövesdy in 1992. Keeping in mind the company’s longstanding efforts of educational purpose, they will be working on a play for kids and families, again, using a play from the beginning years of the company: The Little Boy and the Lions by Ervin Lázár, directed by one of the company’s actors, Gábor Kolozsi Borsos.

In the second half of the season the company is bringing back a director who stands closest to the original experimental values of Figura: Sardar Tagirovsky presenting Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, a play that is essential when talking about the history of the company, being played and re-directed multiple times throughout the 1980-90’s. Reaching back to the early years of Hungarian theatre, István Albu will be directing Szép magyar komédia (Beautiful Hungarian Comedy), anticipated in the spring. The play was first premiered here in 1993, directed by Olga Barabás. This celebratory season will be closed by a collaboration with the Tamási Áron Theatre, coproduction directed by  László Bocsárdi, the original founder of Figura.

Last year the actors of the company were immersed in a film workshop which resulted in a short film with multiple storylines. The scenes will be extended into a 90 minute movie, written ad directed by László Csuja, who directed the most played production in Figura’s history, Stones in His Pockets in 2015.
