The works of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov are timeless. They tell such secrets about the soul, that raise everlasting questions and pose unending challenges for the director, actor and audience alike. Because we all want the same thing: happiness. The question is banal and yet still enigmatic: what does it mean to be happy? How can one reach this state? What must one do for it to never end? What amount of desire, courage, will, perseverance and awareness is required?
Irina, Olga and Masha are sisters. They seemingly live in peace with their brother Andrei in a rural setting where it seems that even the tea’s steam moves in slow motion. Time moves differently here compared to Moscow, where all of them desire to return one day. As the creeping minutes go by an infinite vista of dreams, plans, self-realizations, carriers opens as well as one of possible or impossible loves. Then suddenly everything comes to a grinding halt, even though the luggage is already prepared as are the sisters.
How and how long can one remain in a place over which hangs the memory of the father and that of a childhood that started to fade over the last few years? The possibilities for happiness seem to pale, they hang over like a vale of dust over each Moscow destined luggage and dream. Everything that before was merely somber or leaden at best turns tragic almost unseen. Even though this is a peaceful, quiet, rural setting where even happiness could bloom.
